Day #217 – Walking in Strong Wind

Day #217 – Walking in Strong Wind

Today’s walk began very cool – with a beautiful sunrise and a strong wind.

Later, it warmed up and the winds kept it from feeling hot, though it also stirred up the sand. When 18 wheelers drove by, they stirred up the dust on the road and it ‘sandblasted’ Freedom Walker.

We saw less flowers than on previous days, however we did see some purple and yellow together, sparsely spread on the desert floor.

The day ended with 15.9 miles.

After the walk, we met Melanie, who thinks this walk is “very cool!”

I took a picture of the entrance to a side ‘road’ (posted below). It gives you an idea of the way many areas of the shoulder look – with deep enough sand for a 2004 Taurus wagon to get stuck in. I have to be careful where I choose to pull over and park. I am glad to see some paved areas along the shoulder.

I also took a picture of the road ahead, which you will see below.

I already posted some pictures of flowers we saw along the way. Below is a picture of a plant (the first of this kind we have seen) that has not yet bloomed.

During lunch, Jack saw our shirts and inquired about them, learning about the walk.

These flowers, springing up along the desert floor beside the road, remind me that God can bring forth new life in the most desolate conditions.

Marc Nutter approached from behind Pastor “Chick” and stopped to visit awhile. He is from Ohio, is bicycling for conservation, and plans to cycle up the west coast and then across the country to Maine. He has already cycled over 6,000 miles and expects to cover 6,000 more before he reaches his final destination. He also expressed interest in our walk and wished us safety.
